On New Year's Eve, Nellie, a young and beautiful girl who was the daughter of a landowner and general, sat in her room with a dream of getting married, gazing into the looking-glass. Her eyes were half-closed, and she looked pale, tense, and as still as the looking-glass. As she stared into the mirror, a non-existent but apparent vision of a long, narrow corridor with endless rows of candles appeared, along with the reflection of her face, hands, and the frame of the mirror. Summary of The Looking Glass Class 11 English

This story "New Year's Eve" by Anton Chekhov tells the tale of named Nellie, a young woman who spends her time dreaming of a perfect good future with her destined husband. She pictures them living in the same roof and sharing their life and happy together. However, one night she has a terrifying dream that her husband is sick and ill with typhus, and she must find a doctor near by  to help him. She rushes to the local doctor's house, but he refuses to help because he is exhausted from treating other patients with the same disease. Nellie tries to persuade him but ultimately fails. Realizing that her ideal future might not be as flawless as she once believed, she departs in sadness. The story explores the harsh realities of life and how our dreams may not always align with reality.
